Christoph Haberer – drums, percussion, electronics

Michael Heupel – flutes (concert, alto, bass and subcontrabass flute)

Carlo Rizzo – polytimbral and polytonal tambourine, vocals, reed clarinet

Rhythmic firework and fascinating sounds, gripping improvisations and electronic precision work: this trio brings together musicians who are eager to experiment and develop a completely new percussive and jazz-oriented musical language.

Haberer’s compositions and adaptations of European folk music create the framework for improvisations in the exciting area ranging from natural tones to electronics. The trio share, despite their very different backgrounds, an innovative way of dealing with their special ‘instrumentarium’, and the combination of modern, traditional and archaic elements.

Haberer’s Percussion Project "An den Rändern Europas” (1999), ("On the outer edges of Europe”) marked the beginning of a fruitful cooperation with the Italian tambourine virtuoso Carlo Rizzo – with performances in Weimar, Duisburg, Ankara and Istanbul. Christoph Haberer and flautist Michael Heupel have performed many times together since they were on a joint solo tour in the USA in 1991. Both musicians have been guests in North Africa and at the JazzFest Berlin with Haberer’s "Pulsation" project.

The trio "haberer/heupel/rizzo" gave concerts in April/May 2001 on their first and very successful tour. The events included the "Europhonics” festival in Dortmund, "Jazzin´ Herrenberg" and the "Internationale Musiktage Kloster Schlehdorf” (the International Music Days at Schlehdorf Monastery).

In workshops at the Musikhochschule (College of Music) in Mannheim und the Folkwang-Hochschule in Essen, the musicians gave a practical demonstration of their instruments and offered an insight into their way of playing and composing.

The trio continued working, e.g. playing with great success the 18th International Festival in Krefeld, September 2002, or the 10th Jazzfestival in Izmir/Turkey, April 2003.
